The Source
James A. Michener
Another all-time favorite, this sweeping epic traces the fictitious history of
Makor, a city in Israel from prehistory to modern times. An archaeological
dig at Tel Makor turns up artifacts made up of the remains of successive
settlements over time. Michener chronologically describes the inhabitants
(who are often descendants of characters in earlier chapters) and events in
and around the city over thousands of years.
In true Michener style the story of the Tel Makor grabs you at the beginning,
telling a fascinating story of the Jews and other local inhabitants, of
Judaism and its role in the creation of Christianity and Islam as well as the
establishment of the modern state of Israel. Michener’s research and
attention to the finest of detail make this one of my “all-time” favorites.
