The Milagro Beanfield War
John Nichols

This is a truly enjoyable book.  It is the first book in a trilogy that includes
The Magic Journey and The Nirvana Blues. Milagro is a fun read full of
interesting, eccentric characters caught up in a mini class-war.  The peace-
loving agrarians of Milagro find themselves oppressed by the “city slickers
and suits” who draw up water-compacts and grazing regulations. Slowly,
but certainly, they're being squeezed off their ancestral lands, having their
uncomplicated lifestyle eroded by the landed, the government, and the
wealthy.

But this is not a grim, revolutionary novel, full of dogma and bloodshed. It's a
tale of a bunch of characters, who really just want to be left alone, backed
against the wall and making their last stand.  It is, in essence, the timeless
tale of conflict between hard-working authentic people and the pampered
wealthy.  We find the former interesting and cheer them on when they finally
say, “enough”, and fight back.  Nichols shows the transparency of the latter
and requires the reader to wonder if he or she can live a life worthy of a
Milagro.
